Mesha Sakranti is the vernal equinox and the beginning of the new year in the Hindu solar calendar which occurs when the sun passes into the sign (Sakranti, Samkranti) of Mesha (Aries).
Unfortunately, there are several ways of calculating the Hindu solar calendar, so its date may vary by up to one day in various parts of India depending whether local custom dictates the use of the old or new Hindu calendar or astronomical tables. There is a table of dates collected from various sources near the end of this document.
During this auspicious period, great merit is acquired by performing Havan (Yajna or the Sacred Fire ceremony), Japa (repetition of a Mantra or of God’s name), Shraddha, Charity etc. Householders top up their grain jars and families start wedding preparations for their sons and daughters of marriageable age.
It is variously known as:
Meshadi
Sowramana Ugadi
Baisakhi or Vaisakhi
This is the Sikh version of the festival, celebrated primarily in the Punjab. It is celebrated in the same way as the Gurupurabs and marks the ripening of the corn harvest.
Naba Barsha
The Bengali New Year's Day begin with prabhat pheries (early morning processions), songs and dance to welcome the New Year. A dip in a river or tank is another essential feature of the day's ritual. With powdered rice, the house-wife makes beautiful designs called alpana on the floor.
Vishu, Vishu Bahag, Bishu
Keralites celebrate Vishu, the new year of the Malayalam calendar. It is characterised in Malayali homes, by the first sighting (Vishukkani) of auspicious articles ceremoniously placed before a lamp. Elders give cash presents to dependents and relatives younger to them. This is called Kayneettam (extending the hand). In every instance of which we have records, this holiday falls one day later than the others. 13 eller 14 april

Kopter:
The Coptic calendar has 13 months, 12 of 30 days each and an intercalary month at the end of the year of 5 or 6 days depending whether the year is a leap year or not. The year starts on 11 September in the Gregorian Calendar or on the 12th in (Gregorian) Leap Years. The Coptic Leap Year apparently follows the same rules as the Gregorian so that the extra month always has 6 days in a Gregorian Leap Year. The names of the months and their starting dates are as follows:-
Egyptian Ethiopian Start Date Leap Year
Thuout Meskerem 11 Sept 12 Sept
Thailand:
The Water Festival, known as Thingyan in Myanmar and Songkran in Thailand, occurs around 13 April. In Myanmar it is not quite fixed and occurs during the four days immediately before the Myanmar New Year which takes place on the 17th or 18th of April. All five days are a public holiday. We have been informed that in Thailand it is now fixed on the 13th of April but do not have official confirmation of this. The Thai version of the festival lasts three days, is a public holiday and is considered to be the New Year.
